CROWDRISING SINCE: Jul 22, 2010
Stuff About Me:
Rosetta Stoned & The Higher O'Glyphics! That's the gay-male Baroque trio that my friends and I founded in the late 1960's. We played for the re-opening of a fire-damaged gay steam bath in Detroit. The portable harpsichord got waterlogged and never worked again . . . In 1970 the Ann Arbor Gay Liberation Front asked the University of Michigan to create a staff office to respond to the concerns of lesbian and gay-male students. The University took an enormous risk in establishing the "Human Sexuality Office" (HSO), now the "Spectrum Center", the first office of its kind in the nation and the world . . . We opened the HSO in the fall of 1971. We had asked the University to hire a woman and a man to co-coordinate the office. Cynthia (Cyndi) Gair and I became the first "Lesbian and Gay-Male Advocates", working full-time jobs for quarter-time salaries . . . I worked at the HSO until 1994, obtaining a degree in social work during that time. Any number of former students have shared the humbling comment, "If it wasn't for your counseling and the support of the office, I would have killed myself." Those expressions of gratitude alone would have been enough to make the work worthwhile.
