STUFF ABOUT ME:

This will be my second marathon.. I ran my first marathon in Minneapolis exactly half a lifetime ago.  Unfortunately, my training for this marathon was set back when I developed a stress fracture running in a 10K race on Memorial Day.  However after 2 months of “aqua jogging”…. and feeling thoroughly  ridiculous, I resumed my training….just as the morning light disappeared.  So, I am out at 5 am every morning running down dirt country roads wearing a headlight.. and hoping not to run into a deer, skunk or possum.

I am running the NYC marathon as part of the Colon Cancer Foundation team in memory of Michael Sloan, who lost his 7 year battle to cancer in 2009.  Mike would be proud that I am pounding the NYC pavement, since he was a retiree from the NYC Department of Sanitation.  Mike’s daughter, Erin is a friend and invaluable associate at our company.

Professionally, I am a principal in Sustainable Apparel Group, which does business as Threads for Thought (www.threadsforthought.com).  The company’s core mission is to create and market clothing that is fashionable and value priced while also promoting a sense of responsibility for those who share this planet with us.  Our products use only sustainable materials and are manufactured in the most sustainable manner possible.  We work with factories that respect their employees and treat them humanely and fairly, and we consider them part of our extended family.  We also work closely with several highly regarded charities, notably the International Rescue Committee (www.rescue.org) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (www.nrdc.org) to promote and support the excellent work that they do in the areas of humanitarian and environmental response.

I was privileged to serve as Co-Chair of the International Rescue Committee for 6 years.  The IRC responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people survive and rebuild their lives.  The IRC offers lifesaving care and life changing assistance to those victims who have been forced to flee their homes as a result of conflict or natural disasters.  Today, the IRC works in over 40 countries and in 22 cities in the US.  Throughout my long association with the organization, I have visited our programs in such places as Haiti (following the earthquake) Afghanistan and Pakistan, in the wake of conflict and natural disasters that have plagued that region, and much of Africa that seems caught in a never ending spiral of conflict and hardship, including the tragedy of the famine in Somalia today. I am always overwhelmed with the courage of those with whom we work.. and humbled by our extraordinary staff in the field, who provide life saving assistance under the worst possible circumstances.
