HERE'S THE STORY:

Judy's Angels was formed in 2009 after Judy Aveni lost her battle with ALS in 11/08. Started as a way to keep her beauty and spirit alive, Judy's children, family and friends have joined forces to raise funds for ALS research. Judy's Angels currently participates in the ALS Association's Annual Walk in both Washington, DC and Tampa, FL. Future events include wine tastings and silent auctions to benefit the ALS Association.

The Rest of the story...

Five years into remission from breast cancer, my mother, Judy Aveni, was ready to start living her life again. Her and my father sold their house in Virginia and headed for the sunny skies of Florida. Miles away from family, friends and the warm community they called home for 35 years, they built their dream house with hopes of making beautiful memories together. Two short months after arriving in their new home, Judy started to have problems with her speech. Within the next year, she was diagnosed with ALS.

Judy’s husband, my father, was the best caregiver ever. But even the best need a break every now and then. With a new house in an unfamiliar town, her newfound neighbors and friends rallied around her. They formed a group that donated their time to give my father some much needed breaks throughout the week. He used the time to go grocery shopping, bowling and play poker with the guys. The neighborhood ladies soon were called “Judy’s Angels” because in our minds, they were a true gift from Heaven above.

Late in her disease, Judy could barely speak. Still, she wanted the company of her trusted friends and could carry on quite a spirited conversation with her fancy Eye Gaze machine. Now that Judy is gone, we carry on many spirited conversations and fundraising events in her memory, doing our best to keep her beauty and spirit alive.

Judy lost her battle with ALS on November 5, 2008.
