This year I am running the Cleveland Marathon (all 26.2 miles) for my 40th birthday, but that doesn't matter as much as what I am running for…
A close friend's son, Aidan, was born with cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of 70,000 people worldwide. A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
- clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and
- obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, thanks to advances in research and medical treatments, many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
But it’s still a daily struggle filled with breathing treatments, special diets and desperately trying to avoid lung infections. Check out the photos to the left to see the medications and treatment Aidan has to endure every single day. Aidan is a sweet, spunky 2 1/2 year old... no child should have to go through what he lives with.
I want to help them continue the research to eliminate this disease once and for all. Every step I take in the Cleveland Marathon will hopefully bring them one step closer to a CF cure.
On Sunday, May 20 I will be running for Aidan. Please support my training for the Cleveland Marathon by donating what you can to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
