What does Kure It do?

Kure It provides critical funding for groundbreaking, collaborative research by raising money from the private sector and redirecting those funds to cancer researchers committed to projects that will better treat, and ultimately cure, cancer.

Kure It believes that researchers investigating Targeted Therapies are on the right track (remember the term "Targeted Therapies". It's going to be HUGE!) - and we are committed to raising the critical funding they need to keep up their work. It is our commitment to continue raising funds until we find a treatment for kidney and other underfunded cancers.

How did Kure It start?

The idea to establish Kure It came after Barry Hoeven was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1998 while on a family vacation. Over the past 13 years Barry and his family have been battling this disease.  He has had several operations, including both a radical and partial nephrectomy, and is currently on the medication Sutent to control the current growth of tumors which have metastasized to his lungs.

 Very soon after diagnosis, Barry began to compile information about his cancer including speaking with prominent specialists in the field.  He recognized early on that there is a grave disconnect between the number of people afflicted with kidney cancer and the amount of funding and research being conducted to find a cure.  It became clear to him that more research needed to be done. 

 In April of 2007, Barry partnered with City of Hope to create a fund called Kure It! Kidney Cancer Research Fund, which raised over $400,000 with the help of friends, family and colleagues.  In January 2010, all involved determined the time had come to establish Kure It, Inc. as an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) organization; allowing for a broader range of opportunities resulting in a greater impact. To date, Kure It has raised over $1,600,000 for cancer research. We currently support research at major cancer centers across the United States (see our website for a complete listing at www.kureit.org ) including Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Center and City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center's Beckman Research Institute. 

Kure It’s goal is to be the leader in granting funds to kidney and other underfunded cancer researchers conducting innovative research projects to better treat, and ultimately cure, cancers.

 How can I help?

Thanks for asking! We've got a couple of great ideas!

You may make an online donation to Kure It, which will be redirected to researchers in the form of competitive grants.

 You may support one of our Fundraising Events, such as the Annual USC 901 Club Reunion or the Duffy Boat Race and Poker Run. You can support the upcoming "Rivals United for a Kure" cmapaign, which centers around a documentary called "A City Divided", an intriguing look at one of the most notable rivalries in all of college sports: that between USC and UCLA football.

Drop off your e-Waste at any GREENspot DROPoff  participating self-storage facility. Designate Kure It as your charity of choice, and they'll donate $1 for every item you drop off. To date, GREENspot has contributed over $2,000 to Kure It!

Choose a self-storage facility that participates in Kure It's "Round Up for Research" program. Round up your rent each month (or make a one-time donation), which will go directly to Kure It. Participating facilities include: US Storage Centers, Everest, A-American, Guardian and others. If your self-storage facility does not participate - ask them to start!

Find your nearest Charity Storage Drop-off location and donate your gently-used items to the charity storage unit. These units are auctioned off, with 30% of the proceeds from each unit going to Kure it for research, and the remainder going to other local and national charities. www.charitystorage.org
