Hi Kwynn,

October vote for you, just in time for Halloween! Wanna hear something scary? Children in low-income neighborhoods have access to only one age-appropriate book on average for every 300 children. Only ONE book! That impacts over 16,400,000 children in the United States.

Even more frightening, 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children. Books are so important to a child’s development for learning, imagination and literacy.

Please help Reader to Reader get books into these communities. We donate hundreds of thousands of books each year directly to schools, after-school programs, classrooms, day care programs and other groups serving low-income children across the country. Your donation of $10 today will help us send a box full of much-needed books to6 children that deserve better.
Thanks for all your support, and spread the word!

Happy reading,
Kat (and the Reader to Reader team)

August vote for you! Did you know that 60% of low-income children do not own a single book? School and public libraries are their only source of reading material, yet budget cuts leave many libraries unable to buy new books, or even without a full-time librarian. Reading is so important to a kid's education. Would you help Reader to Reader bring books to low-income schools and libraries across the country? A $10 donation sends a much-needed box of books. If you can't give, please join our team and ask others to help change the world, one book at a time. Thank you!

Summer is here, and I’m …
Summer is here, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to enjoying its glory. (I am!) But did you know that kids forget 1-3 months of learning during the summer? That’s 1-3 months of what they learned the year before, needing to be retaught in the fall before they can even start learning new material. This summer learning loss is worse in disadvantaged children, and widens the achievement gap further.
Summer learning programs are important to keep children’s brains active and engaged. Reader to Reader runs three summer programs, including one with both parents and children to increase family literacy. We have a lot of fun, and we learn A LOT!
Please help us keep summer learning fun and engaging for low-income families in western Massachusetts by joining our team, spreading the word and if you can, donating to Reader to Reader. Your support helps us keep kids reading, learning and succeeding!

Stuff About Me:

I wanted to save the world, so I decided to start at home. I am a 21 year old college student currently attending McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. I play tennis for McNeese and I am pursuing a degree in Business Management. My idea [for today any way] is to attend physical therapy school and work with handicapped children.
I find no greater joy in life than volunteering.

This next year will be my third year to be a counselor at Camp New Directions and I couldn't be more excited about this. Camp has changed my life and the lives of each and every kid that has had the privilege to attend camp. We give the kids skills to help them cope with the stresses they face and help them see that they have options in life. Our theme for camp this year was NOW. We taught the kids to live in the now and only focus on the present. We used the song "This is my now" by Jordin Sparks to help us. We learned the sign language to the song and taught our kiddos as well. We used slogans from the song such as: More than my yesterdays, Breathing in the moment, Somewhere deep inside, and courage like never before.

Coming in a close second to volunteering is my love of travelling. I've been very fortunate to travel around the world playing tennis. I've seen exciting places such as England, Scotland, Holland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Italy, Russia and Canada. Travelling to all these fantastic places has opened my eyes to my fortune and others' needs. I want to better the lives of every person I meet. Camp is one way I can fufill that want.

I am one of two children, my identical twin sister, Claire, who showed me how to use Crowrdrise. Thanks, Claire. I am the proud owner of a drool-monster named Watson Lance Biggs, the English Mastiff.
