La Isla Foundation is addressing the epidemic of Chronic Kidney Disease among sugar cane workers in Central America.
General Information
A community in Central America has been hit hard by the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) epidemic. It is known as La Isla de las Viudas-- The Isle of Widows.
In this community, nearly all men work at a massive sugar cane plantation which produces biofuel, sugar and rum for the U.S. and Europe. 2 out of 3 of these workers develop Chronic Kidney Disease, and the lack of adequate treatment in Nicarag

These men, the breadwinners for their families, leave behind widows who lack job skills. Families struggle in poverty and the workers’ sons follow in their fathers’ footsteps, often suffering the same fate.
The cause of this epidemic is unknown, and the company employing these workers is not providing treatment for those affected. La Isla Foundation is committed to facilitating the research to uncover the cause of this disease so it can be prevented.
Research takes time, and this community requires help now. Through programs developed with community members, La Isla Foundation is enabling self-sufficiency for hundreds of families, while bringing attention to the wider problem. Find out what you can do to be a part of the solution!
