April is National Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases Awareness month. As Vice President of Public Policy at the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF), I am trying to do my part to raise awareness and a few dollars for IDF to continue our work as the national patient organization organization dedicated to improving th diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of persons with primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDD) through advocacy, education and research.
Persons with primary immunodeficiency diseases are people who are born with a malfunctiong or non-existent immune system. Some people call it the "bubble boy disease" after the boy who was born with no immune system (severe combined immunodeficiency disease or SCID) and lived in a bubble for 13 years until he died.
Today with treatment most people with primary immunodeficiency diseases are able to live normal, healthy and productiove lives. For many, treatment consists of infusing antibodies (immune globulins) into the body regularly for the rest of their life. The infused antibodies take the place of the antibodies a normal person's body would ordinarily make to fight off viruses, bacteria and fungi.
