Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser. Latinitas magazine, (www.latinitasmagazine.org) the first digital magazine made for and by Latina youth, was born six years ago in a class at the University of Texas at Austin with the goal to empower young Latinas with multiple forums for expression, in which they can publish their own words. Using media as a vehicle for technology training, Latinitas developed a diverse array of outreach offerings including two online publications for Latina teens, after school clubs, a teen reporter intern program, free Saturday media and technology camps, Spring Break and Summer Camps, media conferences, service learning internships and more.
Our mission is to empower Latina youth using media and technology. Our vision is that all Latinitas are strong and confident in their image. Excluding summer camp fees, Latinitas programs are free and open to all girls. Technology and minority-media based curriculum is adaptable to any audience.
Since 2003, Latinitas has provided direct technology training and esteem-boosting services to nearly 10,000 girls total, over 2500 a year, more than some of our peers in non-profit with ten times our budget and a much larger staff. We managed this type of growth due to the committed efforts of hundreds of volunteers who write, edit, do photography, provide technical assistance, fundraise and promote Latinitas. Our programs target Hispanic girls and teens, ages eight to 18, but are not exclusive to that population. About five percent of club attendees are not Hispanic and are just attracted to Latinitas’ exciting digital technology projects.
