STUFF ABOUT ME:
Me? I think school kids of ALL abilities ought to have playgrounds they can actually PLAY on & benefit from! My son has autism and ADHD, but the recess playground is too STIMULATING for special kids to use, let alone even ENTER with a wheelchair. My buddies and I designed and donated a $135,000 special needs playground to his school in 2009. AND WE ARE DOIN' IT AGAIN here in the metro New Orleans area.
Since my little boy has autism, I know first hand how some children's senses have their volume knob cranked up way too high. Exercise of a certain type - motor sensory stuff - is shown to help kids like my son & others. So with the help of friends, I designed, donated, and installed what we calll a "KidSense" yard at his school. It has been SOOOO successful, that we're doing it again for two more Louisiana schools.
The KidSense yard is meticulously designed as a "motor sensory" playground...the kind of therapy that's been used by Special Educators for over 30 years. The difference is, we duplicated the premise of a school's Sensory Room, but by placing it outside, we could bring in huge climbing opportunities, fast & bumpy slides, and spaaaaaace to run!
With the sky for a ceiling and the wind for their walls, kids with Autism, ADHD, or Special Needs have room to work out their over-stimulation. Studies out of Temple University indicate that 95% of kids with ADHD and 91% of those with Autism have BETTER CONCENTRATION after regular sensory breaks.
That's why our playgrounds go to PUBLIC SCHOOLS...we want to give all kids a sharper EDGE toward education. Better yet, we are wheelchair accessible, feature secret Braille messages all over the place, and are large enough so the WHOLE CLASS comes out with the kids who actually need the break. Yup! Its called REVERSE INCLUSION...typical kids and special kids play alongside each other.
