ROCK PAPER OR SCISSORS: Rock
On January 21st of 2011 I had an "incident". This drug seeking act left me with a severly broken ankle including a compound fracture. After being rushed to surgery I was told by the Doctors that i wouldn't be able to walk for six months and that i wouldn't be able to run for years, if ever. One year later, to the day, I ran 6 miles with the marathon team at Beit T'Shuvah.
That was two Sundays ago.
Last Sunday I continued training with the team (with no intention of joining) and we ran 11 miles along the boardwalk from the Santa Monica pier to Marina Del Ray and back. My intension to just train witht the team and not commit to running the marathon was selfish, I know, but there would pain involved. I had screws and plates in my ankle after all.
As I approached the pier I decided to jump in the icy ocean. I stripped down to my boxer briefs and jumped in. I dove under a wave and as I came up I looked back and noticed the tower that I was living in where I had relapsed 15 months before. I remembered laying in bed, in that apartment, and reading Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. An amazing book to be sure but one that I hadn't totally crasped until that moment. Viktor's worst suffering was at the hand of the Natzi's in a concentration camp. He found meaning in the suffering and he survived and flourished. He then goes on to explain that every man's suffering, his worst suffering, is his own. Find meaning in it.
"Run to Save a Soul".
Rabbi Mark had been saying that since I arrived at Beit T'Shuvuh a couple months ago. "What are you waiting for? Do something!!", echoed through my head in my own voice. If they would have me, I commited to myself to run the marathon at that momment.
I'm not gonna wait anymore.
