Malaria No More is committed to ending malaria deaths in Africa – and we’re helping the world get it done. Malaria No More distributes life-saving malaria control commodities, paired with groundbreaking health communications and high-profile public awareness and advocacy campaigns, to ensure families are safe and protected.
Malaria, an entirely preventable and treatable disease, kills a child under the age of five in Africa every minute, making it one of the top three killers of children on the continent. In addition to the loss of life the disease causes, malaria is a tremendous impediment to economic and social development in sub-Saharan Africa:
· Families spend up to 20% of annual income on malaria-related expenditures
· At least $12 billion is lost in economic productivity from the African economy annually
· Up to 40% of all healthcare expenditures are malaria related
· Malaria alone accounts for 50% of preventable absenteeism in African schools, causing up to 10 million missed school days each year
But with partners around the world, we’re helping to change that. Over the course of the last decade, malaria deaths in Africa have been reduced by 33%; 75% of the continent now has access to a simple life-saving mosquito net; U.S. funding for malaria has increased by 1000%; and African leaders have stepped up to the plate by supporting the mission to end malaria deaths.
By leveraging high-impact awareness campaigns to engage the world and global advocacy to rally leadership, Malaria No More works to keep the malaria fight high on the U.S. and global agenda. Through innovative, attention-getting awareness campaigns targeting key constituencies in the U.S., we’ve helped raise public awareness of malaria as a serious global problem from 28% in 2006 to over 50% in 2011. In turn, the Malaria Policy Center - the nation’s only advocacy organization focused solely on malaria - monitors global health funding levels and educates our representatives in Washington about both the humanitarian and strategic reasons for the U.S. to be a leader in ending the disease’s toll on Africa.
