Dear friends, In record hi…
Dear friends,

In record high temperatures, I'm very proud to say that the MGH Cancer Center for Children Marathon Team conquered the Boston Marathon again this year! Apologies for sending this out today, but I fell asleep pretty early last night...

The temperature apparently hit over 90 deg F on the course out in Framingham and Hopkinton and we definitely felt it. Huge thanks to all of our friends and families for your support, your contributions to the MGHfC, and your cooling thoughts. The crowds were the ones who made this race bearable as every mile or so, some kind soul had their garden hose turned out onto the street for the runners to run through. The firemen who opened the fire hydrants for us were a godsend and every wonderful person out there with a bag of ice that they offered up (especially on Heartbreak Hill) were just about the best people I could imagine.

Extra big thanks to Dr. McGovern for his words of wisdom before the race (Thanks, coach!), to Dan, Patty Cho, and Alex for screaming at us and spurring us on along the last few miles, and to Chanley and baby Charlie, Jose, Stacey, and Crystalline, for meeting us at the finish. This was a big year for Jose, who is one of my patients and who is one year free from kidney cancer after his surgery just before the marathon last year. He is one of my biggest inspirations and reason for running this race. It meant more than I can say to see him and his family at the finish line. I have uploaded some photos from the start and finish to our site if you would like to see the team. (www.crowdrise.com/sarahpsutka).

It was (as predicted) a tough race for us all, but we each finished strong and are super proud. Here are the final results.

Mom/Patsy: 5:44:00 (AWESOME - her average mile/minute was only 1:30 about her base pace in perfect conditions!!! - what a force!)
Will: A Person Record (PR) for his first Marathon EVER: 4:50:00
Sarah: 4:28:01 - that hurt but was way fun :)

Again, thank you so much. We are already looking forward to next year (which will hopefully be much cooler!)

Thank you everyone for everything!

with love,

Patsy, Will, and Sarah

Dear friends and family, W…
Dear friends and family,

Well, the night before the marathon is upon us. As the BAA keeps informing us in somewhat terrifying "Weather Alerts", tomorrow is going to be a scorcher, with projected highs of up to (and possibly over) 90 deg F by midday. Hence, all prior race plans been unceremoniously chucked out the window and a new goal has emerged: finishing (safely). As my friend and college team-mate Justin said over bagels this morning, we will run with "athletic maturity".

Its a new mantra, but we are still incredibly excited about the race, but will be going much slower than we had been aiming for, and will likely (we hope) cross the finish between 4:30 and 5 hours.

For those interested in following along on the BAA.org athlete tracker (www.baa.org) and sending us "cool thoughts," here are our bib numbers:

Patsy: 25435, Running in memory of Paul Carey
Will: 25456, Running in honor of Erica Lawlor
Sarah: 17032, Running in memory of Paul Carey and in honor of Jose Quinones

When we finish, we will reconnoiter at the family meeting spot under "P" if you are planning on braving the heat and being at the finish line. We'll all meet up there and then will begin hydrating and recovering.

Thank you all so much for your support. We just got back from the pasta party for the MGHfC and ate a bowlful of spaghetti with many of the patients whom we are running to support. It was wonderful to see them as they received their own finisher's medals. As of tonight, the team has raised over $515,000 for the children's cancer program at MGH. We thank you so much. We couldn't have done this without you. Our own little "team" is now up to $15,650. We are so grateful to you and thank you all for your support and contributions.

So let the sun shine, bring on the heat, and bring on the hills!

yours in running,
