BENEFITING: MATTOLE RESTORATION COUNCIL
THE STORY:
Every year, the Mattole Restoration Council partners with local King Range National Conservation Area BLM staff to encourage Southern Humboldt youth to become active stewards in their home watershed. In a watershed that is home to one of the last native salmon runs in the state of California, educated, informed youth are an integral part of reaching conservation goals. This project consists of two components: Mattole Ecological Education Program (MEEP), and Nick's Interns. MEEP provides place-based experiential learning about local restoration and conservation issues both in the classroom and out in the field. In our extremely rural locale, this program provides much-needed K-12 science education that would not otherwise exist. The logical next step for youth participating in MEEP is Nick's Interns, which offers youth paid summer internships with local restoration and conservation organizations. The two programs combine to bring comprehensive education and real-life experience to solve local environmental issues.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to support the 2011 season of MEEP and Nick's Interns. To find out more information about our organization or these programs, please visit our main Crowdrise site at www.crowdrise.com/mattole
