EVENT: Save our Lands, Rivers and Trails!

HERE'S THE STORY:

Due to tragically low returns of Chinook salmon and coho salmon in the Mattole watershed, the Mattole Salmon Group is in the process of reinstating their Chinook Survival Enhancement Program and their Headwaters Salmon Enhancement Program. These two programs, known collectively as the Mattole Salmon Enhancmenet Program, rescue Chinook and coho salmon from poor habitat conditions in order to increase chances of survival. The salmon are reared at hatchery facilities, then released into the river to complete their migration to the sea. The Chinook Survival Enhancement Program saves Chinook salmon from perishing in the Mattole estuary due to poor conditions, or in the ocean due to their small size. The Headwaters Survival Enhancement Program saves coho and Chinook salmon from perishing in drying stream reaches in the headwaters. The Mattole Salmon Enhancement Program is temporary while we continue to improve the Mattole watershed, and will stop once these fish are able to survive on their own.

This program not only works to avoid the extirpation of the Mattole populations of coho and Chinook salmon, but also works toward the recovery of their respective ESUs- SONCC coho salmon and CC Chinook. As such, the Mattole Salmon Group is working with interested Federal and state agencies to implement this Program. There is much to be done for this program to begin in the Spring of 2011, and we are continuing to work on the inter-agency collaboration and coordination, the obtaining of approximately 20 permits, and the assembly of all the operating equipment and personnel that is necessary to successfully run the program.

The Mattole Salmon Group needs your help to fund the planning process, to set up the facility, and to implement the program.
