Your phone rings and the voice on the other end of the line is laced with despair. As your mom chokes back tears you realize the magnitude of the words she's saying. Amid disbelief, panic and pain, you suddenly feel the weight of what's to come and you quickly get the eerie feeling that all is lost.
Every hour, five people get this phone call and every hour four people get the call that it's over.
Over 44,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with a deadly disease every year. Doesn't seem like a lot, but what if we told you over 75% of them won't make it to their next birthday or anniversary. This disease doesn't have a 'type' or obvious symptoms. It moves swiftly and silently taking over the body.
Pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer related death. With a survival rate of only 6%, the 2% of National Cancer Institute funding designated for pancreatic cancer hasn't done much. In fact, recent studies show an overall decline in cancer deaths, but an increase in pancreatic cancer death.
Due to a lack of awareness, support, funding and a defeatist attitude, the incidence of pancreatic cancer is only going to get worse. It's projected to increase by more than 55% by 2030.
But it can be stopped. Just like breast cancer and testicular cancer, with proper funding, research and awareness, pancreatic cancer can have a survival rate of 100%. To get there, we need your help.
Our focus is raising awareness and funding for research and clinical trials that work towards finding early detection, treatments and ultimately a cure for pancreatic cancer. These trials are led by world-renowned oncologist, Dr. Daniel Von Hoff and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Team (PCRT). Through globalCure's efforts, each clinical trial gets us one step closer.
