That's who the Great Lakes Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation is.
Myasthenia Gravis (MG) (pronounced My-as-theen-ee-a Grav-us) is a serious autoimmune neuromuscular disease that affects the nerve-muscle connection by varying degrees of weakness in the body. The disease causes fatigue and weakness of the myasthenic's voluntary muscles and can result in life threatening affects if not treated.
MISSION: The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, Inc. is committed to finding a cure for Myasthenia Gravis and closely related disorders, improving treatment options and providing information and support to people with Myasthenia Gravis through research, education, community programs, and advocacy.
VISION: A world without Myasthenia Gravis.
PROGRAMS:
Upon receiving a phone call from a newly diagnosed patient, or a family member/friend of a Myasthenia Gravis patient we send a letter and information on the disease. These packets of information provide vital resources and act as information to alert family members and medical personnel about the disease. Patients and their associated support can call in to the office which is staffed 5 days a week to request additional information, ask questions, or update their health status.
Our newsletter, the MG Communicator is sent out three times annually and reaches over 760 patients, supporters and medical personnel.
Information and support meetings are held several times throughout the year. In the state of Michigan, we reach over 7 different cities each year. These meetings usually feature a speaker that is a specialist in myasthenia gravis. After a short talk, patients and their supporters utilize the time to network, ask questions and tell stories. Our meetins serve as platforms for patients to make lifelong connections with other patients.
Our medication assistance program ensures that patients receive vital medications. It is used primarily to meet a gap in services while patients attain a more stable way to pay for medications.
National research is supported by the Great Lakes Chapter from our donations made to the National Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.
We host three large fundraisers over the year. The first is our 5k run/walk. In 2010 we attracted 40 new participants. We celebrated our 20th annual Hood Open (golf outing) with additional teams and we raised over $8,000, a 30% increase from last year.
June is Myasthenia Gravis awareness month. During the month our chapter reaches out to local news outlets, radio stations, and legislators. Patients and supporters are sent information to distribute. The month was officially recognized by Governor Granholm in 2010.
