We believe a better future in the coalfields requires everyday people to come together and recognize their power to make long-term, lasting change. We envision an organization, led by West Virginians, with real power in West Virginia. We support communities that want to move beyond a coal-based economy and put in its place an economy that values people, land, and mountain heritage.
Larry Gibson's family has lived on or near Kayford Mountain since the late 1700's. More than 300 relatives are buried in the cemetery on Kayford Mountain. Larry and his family used to live on the lowest lying part of the mountain, and looked "up" to the mountain peaks that surrounded them. Since 1986, the slow motion destruction of Kayford Mountain has been continuous -- 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Eighteen years after the "mountain top removal" project began, Larry Gibson now occupies the highest point of land around; he is enveloped more than 7,500 acres of destruction of what was previously a forested mountain range.
The Keeper of the Mountains Foundation is running the On The Road Again Program to build our movement for justice inside and outside Appalachia. We are educating, inspiring, and activating thousands of people around our country through our Speaking Tours. New speakers are touring with Larry Gibson to build their own ability to tell their story on how the coal industry has affected their lives and they will move people to action. This Program has the ultimate goal of building new leaders in the coalfields to fight for justice and build solidarity between not only these leaders and the communities they live in – but also build solidarity with the thousands of people we speak to around the country. We are building a movement.
