There are more than 100,000 missing persons in the United States and an estimated 40,000 unidentified bodies held in coroners' offices or buried in paupers' graves around the country. MPID maintains that while those bodies may be unidentified, they are not unidentifiable. Relatives and friends of a missing person may be able to provide information that can enhance a missing person's report on a level that would enable identification even if a body has decomposed or become skeletonized. Caring anthropologists at MPID will work with relatives and friends of missing persons to make information on missing persons comparable with data gleaned from forensic analysis of dead bodies or of living people who cannot identify themselves due to disease or trauma. MPID profiles will describe how a person's life may have been recorded on his or her bones, teeth, hair, and skin. MPID's services are free of charge to anyone affected by the disappearance of kith or kin and will advocate for them in a manner that is warm, open, safe, and above all, hopeful.
