THE STORY:

Join More Than Sport to give back to the Coeur d'Alene community.  We are excited to partner with The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Center and local Coeur d'Alene Triathlete, Derek Garcia.

Joan Kroc had a clear vision in mind when she bequeathed The Salvation Army with the largest gift ever given to a private charity: give all individuals an equal opportunity to grow natural gifts and talents through access to state-of-the-art recreational facilities. A fulfillment of Joan Kroc’s vision, The Kroc Center in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho houses a fitness and recreation center, aquatics center, and performance venue, and provides a place for guests to feel welcome and supported, no matter what are their physical, mental and emotional goals.

Through The Kroc Scholarship Program, those who are unable to afford a Kroc membership receive 65% off of the membership fee, plus two free personal training sessions and an introductory workshop. Currently 26% of The Kroc Center’s 17,000 members receive a scholarship, and over 10,000 scholarships have been awarded to date. Through the Scholarship Program, individuals who in the past were unable to access any help, now have access to fitness equipment and training, health seminars, educational and financial classes, free family events, and more.

Derek Garcia is a husband of 9 years to Shannon Garcia and has 2 boys, Gabriel and Malachi. He took up triathlon 6 short years ago and as of Janurary 2012 started his first year competing as a professional. His first professional race was Ironman New Orleans 70.3 where he finished 16th out of 40 pro men. Shortly after this Derek was diagnosed with testicular cancer. It has been a true test, but he is determined to be back on the start line as soon as possible. He remains positive and has been surrounded by the amazing community of Coeur d'Alene and has expressed that he truly believes that he is not fighting alone. It is now a goal of the Garcia family to reach others with their message of hope and determination, and to help lead others to early detection of cancer.
