BENEFITING: New York Cares
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Apr 30, 2011
HERE'S THE STORY:

When we were kids, grown-ups told us that things would be easier when we were adults. Unfortunately, sometimes life throws lemons that you can’t turn into lemonade. When that happens, New York Cares is there to help people bring those lemons back to the store and pick out some nice, fresh apples instead.

22% of families who earn less than $25,000 in income have no bank account, leaving them vulnerable to check cashing services and payday lenders. But on our Adult Education projects, volunteers help capable but struggling New Yorkers, many of whom are transitioning out of homelessness, build a brighter future for themselves and their families. Something as simple as chatting with recent immigrants helps them develop language skills that are crucial to their success in the U.S. We also teach financial literacy, prepare students for their GED exams, host computer classes, and coach immigrants on how to pass their U.S citizenship tests.

New York Cares’ programs are varied and extensive, and they can be life-changing for the people we work with—but they also take a big bite out of our budget. Can you help us prepare people for a lemon-free future? Just $25 enables us to buy study materials for three adult immigrants to prepare for the U.S. citizenship exam. You know what to do.

All donations will support New York Cares' general programming, which provides critical services to 400,000 at-risk New Yorkers each year. For information on making donations to support specific programs, please contact Jennifer.Goldschein@newyorkcares.org.
