THE STORY:
There’s a lot of hubbub these days about the sustainability of our future. People are trying to calculate their carbon footprints, predict when the next ice age will hit, and turn vegetables into fuel. But somewhere along the line, we left one variable out of the equation – the children. So, yeah, we went there.
While we believe that caring for the environment is a noble endeavor, New York Cares also believes that children are our future (it’s not often we quote Whitney). We’ve been working tirelessly to teach kids the skills they need to be upstanding citizens of tomorrow—from Young Authors’ Club to science explorations, from bedtime stories to early morning reading, from SAT tutorials to family literacy.
Frankly, it’s more fun than work for most of us. The awesome thing about kids is the way they appreciate the little things in life. Helping a child spell a word can make them smile for hours.
Last year our volunteers spent 33,000 hours tutoring at-risk children, but there’s so much more to do. 43% of New York City elementary school students read below grade level. And we still haven’t taught them how to get a home energy audit! Give $20 to prepare NYC children for brighter futures.
