HERE'S THE STORY:
You may be buoyant and young, but we here at New York Cares know that the older generation needs some good old-fashioned lovin’ too. More than 50% of senior citizens living in residence homes have no visitors to come brighten their day – EVER. Can you hear the sound of a heart breaking?
Now imagine a senior citizen home plus a handful of volunteers armed with hot glue guns and decks of cards. Building a macaroni assault tank with Ole Bessie? Sounds epic. Aw, does that 72-year-old man have a royal flush? Sucks for you. But wait, karaoke with Gramps? And mocktail parties? Looks like your day just got awesome.
Senior citizens need company, and they tend to know a thing or two about life. Our volunteers usually walk away from nursing homes feeling totally fulfilled and happy. A $20 donation to New York Cares will help ensure programs like this exist for a long time and people never have to suffer the injustice of being forgotten.
So seriously, don’t buy that venti iced half caf double caramel latte macchiato tomorrow morning - send the cash our way instead. That way, you can skip the gym and keep some old folks happy at the same time.
