What would you do with an extra $1,600? Save up for a trip to Paris? Go on a wild shopping spree? Buy a pony?
Thanks to New York Cares’ volunteer tax preparers, thousands of New Yorkers got to make decisions about what to do with tax refunds last year. Our volunteers worked with over 9,000 clients to file their taxes, returning a staggering $16.5 million back to low-income New Yorkers. The average return was $1,600. The difference those extra dollars can make for a struggling family is huge– they take the pressure off unpaid bills and getting basic necessities like school supplies and food.
We’re aiming to take this program above and beyond this year’s results in 2011. To do that, New York Cares needs an army of volunteers to join the program, and we need funds to recruit and train them. Just think, a $20 donation from you could give more than $16.5 million back to the city in tax returns. The numbers don’t lie – donate now. And, hey, there’s a tax deduction in it for you, too.
