WHAT WE DO:

NORMAL In Schools is a national nonprofit organization that educates about eating disorders, the therapeutic impact of the arts, body image, self esteem and family communication. Our programs include:

-- The NIS Program. An award-winning, Off Broadway rock musical which travels to schools, universities, conferences and medical facilities with expert clinicians and people in recovery to educate about eating disorders, body image and self esteem. The NIS Program has proven to break the stigma and shame surrounding mental illness and has gotten people into recovery. It works. It rocks.

-- SELF ESTEEM STOMP. This annual event takes place in October in Milwaukee, WI. Families learn about self esteem and celebrate with a fun walk which ends in an "interactive experiential playground" filled with art, yoga, music, theatre and other fun activities for the entire family.

-- INSIDE OUT -- Celebrating inner beauty through theatre, music and art. This annual event is held during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (February) and educates about mental illnesses using art, theatre and music. Hosted by Miss America 2008, this event is an elegant way to learn about the therapeutic impact of the arts.

-- TEAM NORMAL. A program to educate athletes about eating disorders and about employing yoga and mindfulness in exercise.

Normal In Schools
Normal In Schools SAYS:
NORMAL was not just a musical to me - it was the beginning of a new journey of life. I am an adult female and I have been struggling with an eating disorder for almost 15 years. The first time I saw the musical I was moved beyond belief, but it was the talk back that really hit me. Dr. Laura Lees did the talk back that night and for the first time ever, I heard the words, “A full recovery is possible.” Before that I only heard that people who have an eating disorder would struggle for the rest of their lives. Because of this idea, I didn’t want to get help because I thought, “What’s the point?”

But as soon as I heard with such conviction that a full recovery is possible, I knew immediately I wanted to start therapy and get on the road to recovery.

Thanks to NORMAL and some very amazing people associated with it, I am on the road to a full recovery, and I truly believe it is possible.

“I wanted to let you know that I just got off the phone with my niece (she was in her guidance office at school because she had a panic attack about having eaten breakfast) and she wants to go to residential treatment NOW. I feel like NOR•MAL started a chain reaction of hope this week and my niece and her family finally can imagine a brighter and healthier future for all involved. I have to reiterate: her big decision to enroll in a treatment program, truly, was directly connected to NOR•MAL. Her mom agrees. We've been around and around for the last several years trying to get more focused help for her; and, it was the combination of the theater part, the whole family on stage part, and her talk with the person in recovery that did the trick.

There is a whole new layer of honesty in the family now that has been a long time in coming. This is new. This feels different. And you've all been a part of making that happen.”

“I need to tell you about the changes that have taken place since my 12 year old daughter and I saw NORMAL. After the play we had coffee and we talked about the play. I let her know about some things in my life and my bad relationship with food. She revealed that some of the girls at her school were getting really mad at her at lunch and were accusing her of having an eating disorder. Over the past few weeks her grades had been dropping and she had been isolating more and more – arguing with and losing friends. I was getting really worried. Since we saw NORMAL, we have begun shopping together and making her a lunch every day – she had Ds and Fs in her academic classes three weeks ago which is very out of character for her, and she is up to Cs and one D now. She is bouncing back. If we had not seen the play, who knows how much longer it would have been before we had this conversation? I am so grateful that you brought us this program. It was a powerful play that has opened the door to healthier living in my home.”
