WHAT WE DO:

NORMAL In Schools is a national nonprofit organization that educates about eating disorders, the therapeutic impact of the arts, body image, self esteem and family communication. Our programs include:

-- The NIS Program. An award-winning, Off Broadway rock musical which travels to schools, universities, conferences and medical facilities with expert clinicians and people in recovery to educate about eating disorders, body image and self esteem. The NIS Program has proven to break the stigma and shame surrounding mental illness and has gotten people into recovery. It works. It rocks.

-- SELF ESTEEM STOMP. This annual event takes place in October in Milwaukee, WI. Families learn about self esteem and celebrate with a fun walk which ends in an "interactive experiential playground" filled with art, yoga, music, theatre and other fun activities for the entire family.

-- INSIDE OUT -- Celebrating inner beauty through theatre, music and art. This annual event is held during National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (February) and educates about mental illnesses using art, theatre and music. Hosted by Miss America 2008, this event is an elegant way to learn about the therapeutic impact of the arts.

-- TEAM NORMAL. A program to educate athletes about eating disorders and about employing yoga and mindfulness in exercise.

Normal In Schools
Normal In Schools SAYS:
If I had to sum up the effect of seeing a NORMAL performance in one word, I’d choose “freeing.” You see, when you have an eating disorder, all you feel is trapped—trapped by the behaviors of eating disorder and trapped by the shame that is associated with the disease. In our society, having an eating disorder doesn’t elicit feelings of compassion the way a diagnosis of a more “mainstream” disease does. I chalk that up to a lack of information because people are afraid to talk about eating disorders. NORMAL breaks that silence and provides the needed information through its lighthearted—but respectful—spin on a very complicated topic. Through it, I found a renewed sense of hope, my shame lifted even higher and I finally experienced that freedom.

Dear NIS,

The afternoon prior to your performance, my daughter and I had an appointment w./ her therapist where we would discuss her issues with food. On the way home I asked if she might like to go see a play about a family struggling with parents who think their child has an eating disorder. She reluctantly agreed.
The few hours we sat and watched NORMAL was a truly life changing experience for me and my family. I now have hope that BOTH my daughter and I can re-establish our relationship with each other.

I can't thank you enough for what you have given to our family.

Dear NORMAL In Schools,

I wanted to write to you and tell you how much of an impact NORMAL has made upon me. In all honesty the entire time I was in treatment, I was convinced that I would never get better and would be fighting my way through life in and out of treatment until I died. The very last week I was in treatment, I saw NORMAL. That last week was the most impactful week of treatment of all the months I spent there. Even though I don't have the family like is depicted in the play, I felt the impact of the eating disorder for all of the people in my life who have been there for me throughout the years....even my younger brother. I'm not fighting the eating disorder anymore, I'm beating it. I know I have a long way to go, but I haven't felt this good in years.
