BENEFITING: DEVELOPMENTS IN LITERACY INC
DEADLINE TO GIVE: Nov 01, 2010
HERE'S THE STORY:

My Story
I've been working with DIL for a little while now trying to figure out the best way to reach people and urge them to donate. This is an amazing organization doing a lot for the people of Pakistan year-round and are now doing even more to support the flood relief efforts. I support this organization 100%!

Beginning in July 2010 flood waters began to devastate already fragile areas in Northern and Southern Pakistan. Estimates of the actual number of people dead or affected by the disaster came pouring in and increased as the days went on. As of August 23, 2010 the United Nations has estimated that over 20 million people have been impacted by the flood waters.

This impact of this flood will be felt for quite sometime regardless of aid efforts. The World Health Organization has estimated that over 1.5 million people in Pakistan currently face deadly health complications including malaria. These health problems can be attributed to contaminated drinking water and the destruction of basic sewage systems. If this wasn't enough, many of the health facilities that would have been able to care for these individuals have been destroyed by flood waters.

Developments in Literacy

The organization I am raising money for is Developments in Literacy, a US-based non-profit organization. Since 1997 DIL has been working to improve education for over 17,000 Pakistani children. Since the flood, the organization has been working to raise money for food, water, medical supplies, shelters, stoves and other aid. This organization is one of many organizations working on the grass-roots level and directly giving aid to those hurt by the flood. Five of DIL's school buildings have been damaged and countless school families have been devastated.

The Face Behind the Picture

In Pakistan, where an appalling 14 percent of rural girls are literate, this girl should be in school, not running from rising floodwaters. She is one of 11 children and is from Khairpur, where many villages are submerged. After escaping in the night, her mother later delivered another infant in a tent. Since DIL operates 53 progressive schools in Khairpur, the nonprofit secured clothing, shoes, infant formula, water bottles, and other emergency aid for this girl’s family and 2,000 others. Now you can help her and other children continue to get emergency relief and secure an education. Girls’ education in Pakistan can’t be swept away by floodwaters. Even $10 makes a life-saving difference!
