HERE'S THE STORY:

Beginning in July 2010 flood waters began to devastate already fragile areas in Northern and Southern Pakistan. Estimates of the actual number of people dead or affected by the disaster came pouring in and increased as the days went on. As of August 23, 2010 the United Nations has estimated that over 20 million people have been impacted by the flood waters.
Countless villages have been evacuated and millions of people have lost their homes and what little belongings they had. The international community is doing what it can to aid in the flood relief, however reaching people on the ground has been a challenge because of damaged lands and destroyed infrastructure.
This impact of this flood will be felt for quite sometime regardless of aid efforts. The World Health Organization has estimated that over 1.5 million people in Pakistan currently face deadly health complications including malaria. These health problems can be attributed to contaminated drinking water and the destruction of basic sewage systems. If this wasn't enough, many of the health facilities that would have been able to care for these individuals have been destroyed by flood waters.
One Family's Story:
In the Sindh Province of Pakistan Busar Jatoi's family works to pick up the pieces. Without food or a home the family sough refuge in an abandoned school after the floods waters hit. Shockingly, this family of 25 have managed to sustain themselves in this school ever since. The family has little food and has almost no medical care. What is even more surprising in that Busar Jatoi just turned 100 years old and is forced to evacuate his home with little support.
Developments in Literacy
The organization I am raising money for is Developments in Literacy, a US-based non-profit organization. Since 1997 DIL has been working to improve education for over 17,000 Pakistani children. Since the flood, the organization has been working to raise money for food, water, medical supplies, shelters, stoves and other aid. This organization is one of many organizations working on the grass-roots level and directly giving aid to those hurt by the flood. Five of DIL's school buildings have been damaged and countless school families have been devastated.
