Hi. My name is Patrick Dickens (Pat) I am from South Africa.
I learned from a young age to appreciate the world around me and to respect the amazing creatures I share it with. I've always had a love for animals and nature and was absolutely horrified when I learned of the Namibian seal cull.
Each year, 86 000 Cape Fur seals are savagely bludgeoned to death to pander to the whims of vanity created by the fur industry. I resigned from my job in the corporate world to address the situation. I began as volunteer country coordinator for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society before starting my own NPO called "The Seals of Nam"
Since then we have staged protests against the Namibian cull in leading cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg, Brussels and Brisbane. We garnered support from local celebrities, appeared in several news and magazine articles, have been guests on radio and TV talk shows and have provided logistical support to Sea Shepherd for their undercover Operation Desert Seal to Namibia.
In September 2011 I flew to Windhoek to do a presentation to the Namibian Ombudsman, along with other stakeholders such as IFAW, WSPA, Sea Shepherd, the NSPCA, South African Seal Saving Initiative and Seal Alert SA. I will continue to fight for these animals because beating them to death is barbaric, loathesome, iniquitous and goes against every grain of my beliefs.
