ROCK PAPER OR SCISSORS: Paper
I'm 23 years old, a native Texan, and now live in Los Angeles. Community service has been a part of my life since I joined the Boy Scouts as a kid (I'm now an Eagle Scout). My background of service, my sociology education, and my yearning for a new adventure led me to join City Year Los Angeles.
WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:
City Year is a national nonprofit and AmeriCorps organization that unites young people of all backgrounds for a year of full-time service, giving them the skills and opportunities to change the world. Serving as tutors, mentors, and role models, we make a difference in the lives of children and transform schools and neighborhoods across the United States and in South Africa. City Year is in its third year in Los Angeles, and most of the 150 corps members are working in elementary and middle schools across the city.
I'm on the team that runs the City Heroes program, which is a service-learning and leadership development program for high school-aged youth. In the program, Heroes are given the opportunity to learn about pressing social issues and make a difference by giving back to their communities through service. Past topics have included racism, making healthy choices, and youth activism.
Bottom line, we work really hard to make a difference in these kids' lives.
