My Essay: My main reason for joining Team Hoyt in running the 2012 Boston Marathon is to complete this prestigious event with my son, Derek Schultz, age 33. Derek has run Boston in 2009, 2010, 2011, and is qualified for 2012. He will apply with me to join Team Hoyt as a qualified runner and will raise the $1500. Along with running marathons in Philly, New York, and Chicago; Derek chose to support me in my first marathon – San Francisco, 25 July 2010 – at my pace while wearing a shirt printed with:”my Dad’s first 26.2”. He also supported me in a similar fashion at my second marathon – Marine Corps, 31 Oct. 2010. Derek just completed his first 100 mile Ultra Endurance run by finishing in 3rd place overall, (20hr -38min) in the Pine to Palm 100 mile trail run in Oregon (09/17/11). I am super proud of his accomplishments!
I am an USATF member: 6110237508. I am a member of the Rosemont Running Club and enjoy both road and trail events. I have completed several events directed by Pretzel City Sports – operated by Ron and Helene Horn. Through this association, Derek and I have had the pleasure to make the acquaintance of Bart Yasso. It was indeed a memorable occasion when we got a shout out by Bart to his PA friends from the starting stage of the San Francisco Marathon.
