The Red Wolf Coalition is a one-of-a-kind conservation organization. Our focus is helping to restore one of the most endangered animals in the world to its native home. Once the top predator throughout the mid-Atlantic region and the Southeast, the red wolf’s howls were silenced after decades of systematic, deliberate extermination and habitat loss. By the late 1960s, only a remnant population of red wolves struggled to survive in a tiny sliver of insect-infested marshland along the Gulf Coast. When the race to save the species from extinction began, it was almost too late.
But because concerned people turned caring into action, a pioneer plan was developed and carried out that empowered the red wolf to win the battle against extinction. This conservation victory has made it possible for about 130 red wolves to now roam in the wild in northeastern North Carolina, and for 42 breeding facilities to safeguard a population of captive red wolves.
Based in the North Carolina restoration area (the world’s only wild home for red wolves), the Red Wolf Coalition works to fulfill the promise of life for these rare and beautiful animals by teaching people about the species and by showing them the value of having red wolves present on the landscape.
