PROJECT IS COMPLETE! WE DID IT!!
Our Juvenile Court is child friendly but the play room hadn't been updated in years! The trains weren't Thomas - they were riding on dusty tracks. The books were old and worn, not the old and worn type that you treasure on your bookshelf. We needed a redo and thanks to CrowdRise and everyone who donated - we got it done!! I was an attorney representing children and parents in the foster care system from 2002 - 2010. My child client's would often come to court, and I heard from so many former foster children that this it's so important to see court, meet their judge, have a voice, and be a part of the process.
But sometimes kids don't want to sit in the courtroom and hear all the details. They need a room that's cozy (bean bags?), safe (new shelving?), fun (flatscreen? wii?) and maybe even a place they can do their homework and play (paper, pencils, art supplies)!
We had a space but no $ to fill it! So I started a fundraiser to give some of the most deserving children - foster children - a simple, safe and creative new space to play at the Juvenile Courthouse in Portland, Oregon.
The Multnomah Bar Foundation (MBF) board voted in favor of receiving the money raised for refurbishing the space and replacing the toys at the Juvenile Justice Center where children wait for their parents while they are in court. It is within the MBF's mission.
In January 2012, the children's playroom was completed - the walls were painted in vibrant blue, green and orange. A hopscotch board was sewn into the carpet, and we got new and safe shelving, books, a children's table, chalk and toys! It looks amazing, thanks to your wonderful donations and CrowdRise! Best of all, the kids who come through the courthouse feel like it's their own now. The kids feel comfy and cozy in this new, colorful space. Goodbye to the old, boring, depressing grays, and welcome to the new, empowering, child-friendly, bright space that was made possible by friends, family, and colleagues - thank you!!
