I grew up in Michigan surrounded by a really close family, and it's that closeness that drives me to give back to families because that's the number one thing that I believe in - family and togetherness. Family roots, experiences, opportunities, respect, communication, and relationships shape us and generations to come.
So, for a career, I became an attorney for children and parents in the foster care system. I also handled other cases that deeply affect a family, like domestic violence cases, juvenile immigration and adoptions. While it sounds like intense conversation or high burn out work, it was a dream job.
After working as an attorney for many years, I constantly tried to think of creative ways to improve the system - that is the spirit behind my first Crowdrise Project!!!
Why? I was getting my hair cut one day. After talking over the usual, she asked me - if you had to give one difference between a foster child and, let's say, (her) child, what would it be? That very day, an eight year old foster child had, again, been asking for a bike. He didn't have one. His caseworker was 'submitting a request' for funding for a bike through different agencies and looking for pots of money to get a bike for him. That's the difference, I said. Three days later, she dropped off one of her son's barely used BMX bikes at my house.
In case you were wondering, I don't like to bike, but love to cook, hike with my dog, read and write, hang out with friends, and go to the beach and the mountain. I also like to travel and am looking for a cooking trip to learn how to make the perfect pizza!
I'm no longer lawyering. I moved on to different dream jobs - wrote my first book about a family that's been affected by the foster care system and working with a fantastic NYC editor / agent to try to get it published - wish me luck! While it's fiction, it's a compelling story about a family struggling to keep their family together while faced with accusations of abuse and I don't think they did it. Do you? Wait for more...
WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:
Because I look fairly decent in my photos and I'm trying hard. That's all we can ask for. And vote for everyone else, too, who has no spelling errors.

Happy New Year! A vote from me to you, and remember to find the time to read something this year, in between all the wonderful work you do!
"These are not books, lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves. From each of them goes out its own voice... and just as the touch of a button on our set will fill the room with music, so by taking down one of these volumes and opening it, one can call into range the voice of a man far distant in time and space, and hear him speaking to us, mind to mind, heart to heart." ~Gilbert Highet
