BENEFITING: OKLAHOMA FIT KIDS COALITION INC
THE STORY:
Too many Oklahoma children face overwhelming barriers when it comes to their health and fitness. We strive to make the healthy choice the easy choice for Oklahomans everywhere.
Having enjoyed numerous policy and program successes in the past, we are ready to pursue a new endeavor-- empowering students to create running clubs in schools across the state.
We realize when it comes to physical activity, not every kid enjoys competitive sports. We want those young people who don't participate in their schools' athletic programs to still be able to get their recommended 60 minutes of physical activity a day.
We'll begin an application process promptly for our Youth Advisory Council, which will consist of young Oklahomans throughout the state who want to inspire their peers to value their health. They will be given the voice and authority to initiate these running clubs, while we give them the tools they need to succeed.
We're hoping for support from individuals and entities who want to see a healthier Oklahoma. We know the childhood obesity epidemic is a systemic and complex problem that must be addressed from every facet of our culture. From a state level, community level, corporate level, and individual level.
What better way to approach this new project than to lead by example! We're excited to "walk the walk" (or run the run, if you will). We'll be running as many races as we can, representing the Oklahoma Fit Kids Coalition. The end goal will be to have a relay team of Oklahoma kids from running clubs ready for the 2013 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon.
