HERE'S THE STORY:

I completed my first marathon in March 2010 in Washington DC. I am registered for the Philly Marathon in November of 2010. While I am probably the most unspectacular runner in the world (PR 4:25, 0 ultras completed), I do like the sport and plan to continue to run for 25 more years. My personal goal is to run a marathon in 50 states. I plan to do two marathons a year until I reach my goal. My races and this website will be used to promote awareness and hopefully raise some dollars for Greg Mortenson's school building (and other projects including mid-wifery training) projects in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

To hear Mortenson's story, I highly recommend that you get a copy of his book, Three Cups of Tea and then read it. I will do my best to sum up his story: It was the early 90s and Mortenson was trying to climb to the top of K2. He somehow ends up straying from the group and getting lost. He's freezing, stumbling around the place, until he ends up in a remote Pakistani village. The village people (not the band) look at this weirdo curiously, and take him in and help him regain his health. When he is recovered, Mortenson spends some time with the village chief. He discovers a bunch of children sitting by themselves in dirt. He soon learns that these children are practicing some lessons they learned. They have no school building and no teacher to supervise, but they are still eager to do whatever they can to learn. Mortenson obviously is moved by the scene so he vows to return and build a school. And he does. And then he builds another. And another.
Mortenson's vision is to primarily provide at least a fifth grade level education to the young girls in the village. He feels that educating girls (as well as boys, although boys are more likely to leave a village), can help improve a villages overall health and decrease infant mortality rates.
I am not in a band so I will not ask you to buy a cd. I don't drink that much so I won't ask you to buy me a beer. Instead I am asking you to help out some innocent kids who are looking to learn and are in need of some school supplies.
