EVENT: 2012 Boston Marathon

THE STORY:

I am so excited to be running for the Samaritans! Samaritans does life saving work. I know the comfort they give on a personal level, as I wrote a memoir (In Her Wake: A Child Psychiatrist Explores the Mystery of Her Mother's Suicide) about the impact of my mother's suicide and right before I went "public" I met with Roberta Hurtig, the Executive Director of the Samaritans. She was by my side at many a book reading. This steady presence for those of us who have lost someone ot suicide gives us courage to move on.

As a child psychiatrist I know that many times when someone is suicidal, it is a temporary crisis that can resolve in 24 hours (www.meansmatters.org). When someone is desolate, a call to the Samaritans and talking to a volunteer can be vital so someone can find life saving strength.

I have been a long distance runner for over thirty years with nine Boston Marathons under my belt. Each marathon is different: the weather, the pace, my age! And this will be an extra special run as I am joining with the Samaritans team and my daughter Lila, a first marathon for her. I hope I can channel my competitive energy to raising funds for Samaritans; I am replacing my speed with endurance and persistence.
