STUFF ABOUT ME:

I am 21 years old finishing up my second year of City Year in Los Angeles. I grew up in Mississippi and went to college in Missouri. Though my time with City Year is coming to an end, my lifetime of service and dedication to changing the world is only just beginning! I will return to Missouri in June to finish college and further explore the world of service!

I chose City Year because I wanted to do something that made an impact. Sometimes the hours are long and you can't see the effect you're having right away, but it's obvious that City Year in a school has a huge impact on the school as well as the individual students we work with.

Letter to editor of The News-Leader

July 2009

Picking up the newspaper on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 was one of my proudest moments. I very much appreciated the article that donned the front page as a call to action to the Springfield community into volunteerism from Mayor Jim O'Neal. To repeat it merely sounds like a broken record, but the economy of our nation is not in the best position it has ever been. We do not have all of the resources we are accustomed to at our disposal anymore, and alternative methods of caring for our communities are becoming necessary. A few months ago, our President made a national call to service, encouraging Americans to come together as a community to not only identify needs, but to meet them by working together and giving up as much time and energy as possible to solve those problems. Whether it means helping out at your local soup kitchen to serve a meal or two a week, cleaning up a park, becoming a mentor to a child that you know could use a friend and role model, there is an abundance of opportunities in our area to volunteer and do something outside of yourself; to help enhance the lives of others and your community as a whole. The nonprofit that I currently work for uses the phrase “Never Doubt” in all that we do. This refers to the quote made my Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” I encourage the Springfield community to live by this quote.

WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR ME:

I am dedicated to service. I have found (thanks to City Year) the place I was meant to be. I am completely sold on the idea that young people can change the world and will do everything in my power to see to it that it happens.

This year, I am serving at Berendo Middle School. We have been tutoring and mentoring students for almost ten months now and have seen great improvements in both their grades and their behavior. I want to make sure that after my ten months here are finished, City Year will be able to return to Berendo in full force to continue with my students and many, many more.

Welcome to Crowdrise vote coming your way :)

Can you help spread joy to VERY deserving children? By donating $20 to Imagine Scholar's student birthday project, you'll produce the purest kind of excitement and a lifelong memory. Our 25 students have never had the chance to celebrate a birthday before, let alone eat cake. With every $20 donation comes photo footage of one of the student's special day :)

Best wishes,
Megan + Imagine Scholar Team

Happy May! It’s finally spring, and kids will soon be running out the school doors into sweet summer freedom. But over 19,000,000 children across the country do not own a single book. Can you imagine a summer without even a little fun reading?

Please take a minute to check out Reader to Reader's newest fundraiser with Twive & Receive: http://twive.razoo.com/story/Amherst-Loves-Books Your donation on June 14th could help us win a share of $30,000! Now more than ever, the smallest donation can have a huge impact. You can sign up for a reminder email on our page, or if you just can't wait to get books in the hands of children, donate now. Thank you for your support!

Happy April, CR friend!
Reader to Reader is auctioning off some great artwork to raise funds for our many international programs, thanks to our friends at the ART4GOOD Foundation. If you like art, books, or education, stop by and take a look at the 35 beautiful pieces available! http://bit.ly/HjFtMO
You get a beautiful piece of art, and RTR can:
-provide special education programs for children in the Dominican Republic;
-teach women to read in Nigeria;
-keep abandoned children in childhood through reading and improve theater in rural China;
-sponsor Haitian kids to finish school;
-continue to grow our public library in a coffee-farming Costa Rican village;
AND support many other programs that do wonderful work in India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Kosovo, Ghana and other countries.
If art isn’t your thing, you can still support our programs by donating or joining our team. Take a look at my projects to see more of what we do.
All the best, and HAPPY READING,
Kat
