  TUSK's  14th Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon will take place at the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, 140 miles north of Nairobi, on Saturday 29th June 2013. Organised by Tusk Trust and supported by Safaricom, this fundraising event will host 1,000 runners from 20 different countries. The Safaricom Marathon is regarded as one of the ten toughest marathons in the world. However, participants of all abilities take part, from recreational runners, walkers and amateurs, to professionals like former world record holder, Paul Tergat.   The event is run through some of Africa’s most beautiful scenery. Mount Kenya lies to the south and there are breath-taking views north towards Samburu and Mount Lololokwe. The heavily protected 65,000 acre wildlife sanctuary is home to over 100 rhino, herds of elephant and vast numbers of plains game including zebra, giraffe, buffalo and much more.   The impact of the event has been huge and the benefits tangible. Since its inception, the event has raised over $2.5 million for projects across Kenya. Tusk Trust has been a conservation partner to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy since its creation twenty years ago, and has always shared a common goal to use wildlife conservation as a catalyst to alleviate poverty, reduce conflict, and improve education and livelihoods in rural areas rich in biodiversity. The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust works to protect the legendary ecosystems and astounding biodiversity of East Africa through conservation that directly benefits local Maasai communities.

The world increasingly relies on many traditional communities like the Maasai to protect the ecological treasures that exist within the land that they own. But the incredible wilderness and wildlife of Africa's grasslands and the famous culture of the Maasai people both face daunting threats to their long-term survival. The fate of both rests with the Maasai themselves as they work to figure out how to benefit from their incredible natural resources while preserving them.

That's what MWCT is all about...a pioneering partnership between professional conservationists and dynamic young Maasai leaders to show that the Maasai community can thrive, not just survive, by managing their ecosystem wisely.

MWCT's efforts are focused on the Maasai communities and landscapes of Kenya’s Chyulu Hills, within the world-famous Amboseli-Tsavo Ecosystem. This is Hemingway's "Green Hills of Africa", deep cloud forests on hills over the savannah teeming with wildlife and Mt. Kilimanjaro rising out of the plains. The Maasai communities of this area own all of the land between the protected National Parks and within their land lie critical wildlife migration corridors and habitat reserves, forests that are carbon sinks and rivers and springs that supply the fresh water not only to this ecosystem but to more than 7 million people in Kenya, including the 2nd largest city.

MWCT funds and operates programs that promote sustainable economic benefits from conserving this ecosystem. Lease payments for conservancy zones, carbon credits, payments for watershed protection, sustainable eco-tourism, wildlife monitoring and security, conservation and tourism employment...these are just some of the ways MWCT is creating a cutting edge model of successful community-based conservation. And these benefits go where the community needs them most: Education and Health programs.

And we need your help! Lions, elephants, great herds of antelopes...and the Maasai. These are treasures the whole world cherishes.

Spring has finally arrived here (officially anyways) in Wisconsin and with it, so have the birds!! To celebrate, and to raise money to ensure that our Wisconsin birds continue to return, my mom and I will once again be participating in the Rainforest Biodiversity Group's annual Bird-a-Thon on May 11th. This will be our 5th annual event. Over the years we have identified 172 different species, of which over 50% of them are migrants that use the rainforests, warm weather and land that the RBG works hard to protect. The RBG isn't just about birds, its about preserving the environment and its users. Last year they provided a grant to Osa Conservation to help build a turtle hatchery which will protect and release up to 10,000 sea turtles every year! Also, as we have in the past, my wife Sue and I will match all $ donated to the RBG with a donation to the Breast Cancer Network of Western New York. As many of you know, my mother was diagnosed a few years back with breast cancer. The Breast Cancer Network of WNY has been a great resource for her! The Rainforest Biodiversity Group is a Madison, Wisconsin based 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works hard to protect the tropical habitat that many of our Wisconsin breeding birds use during our long, cold winter months, so all donations are fully tax-deductible.
