HERE'S THE STORY:
BACKGROUND: The Shuar people of the Ecuadorean Amazon recently won title to most of their lands – 700 square miles located deep in the forests of the Kutuku Mountains, one of the most biodiverse places on earth. Now, however, their lands are threatened with oil development. The Rainforest Foundation has partnered with them for the past six years to have their lands recognized, to strengthen their organization, and on sustainable development projects.
PROBLEM: The Ecuadorean government is interested in pursuing oil drilling throughout the Amazon, including on Shuar lands. The Shuar have been fighting oil exploration on their lands since the 1990’s, when the government first granted oil companies the rights to drill there. They were successful in fighting the companies off, in a landmark lawsuit. But the threat of oil drilling has come back, and the Shuar need support to successfully protect their lands.
WHAT WE NEED SUPPORT FOR: The primary goal of this project is to provide the Shuar with the necessary means to address threats to their lands and resources. Specifically, this project will help the Shuar gather together with other indigenous groups in the region to form a joint strategy for the protection of their lands. Developing and implementing this unified Shuar strategy will be critical to successfully protecting their lands, for which they have fought so hard.
