August vote for you! Did you know that 60% of low-income children do not own a single book? School and public libraries are their only source of reading material, yet budget cuts leave many libraries unable to buy new books, or even without a full-time librarian. Reading is so important to a kid's education. Would you help Reader to Reader bring books to low-income schools and libraries across the country? A $10 donation sends a much-needed box of books. If you can't give, please join our team and ask others to help change the world, one book at a time. Thank you!

Summer is here, and I’m …
Summer is here, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to enjoying its glory. (I am!) But did you know that kids forget 1-3 months of learning during the summer? That’s 1-3 months of what they learned the year before, needing to be retaught in the fall before they can even start learning new material. This summer learning loss is worse in disadvantaged children, and widens the achievement gap further.
Summer learning programs are important to keep children’s brains active and engaged. Reader to Reader runs three summer programs, including one with both parents and children to increase family literacy. We have a lot of fun, and we learn A LOT!
Please help us keep summer learning fun and engaging for low-income families in western Massachusetts by joining our team, spreading the word and if you can, donating to Reader to Reader. Your support helps us keep kids reading, learning and succeeding!

Happy May! It’s finally spring, and kids will soon be running out the school doors into sweet summer freedom. But over 19,000,000 children across the country do not own a single book. Can you imagine a summer without even a little fun reading?

Please take a minute to check out Reader to Reader's newest fundraiser with Twive & Receive: http://twive.razoo.com/story/Amherst-Loves-Books Your donation on June 14th could help us win a share of $30,000! Now more than ever, the smallest donation can have a huge impact. You can sign up for a reminder email on our page, or if you just can't wait to get books in the hands of children, donate now. Thank you for your support!

Happy April, CR friend!
Reader to Reader is auctioning off some great artwork to raise funds for our many international programs, thanks to our friends at the ART4GOOD Foundation. If you like art, books, or education, stop by and take a look at the 35 beautiful pieces available! http://bit.ly/HjFtMO
You get a beautiful piece of art, and RTR can:
-provide special education programs for children in the Dominican Republic;
-teach women to read in Nigeria;
-keep abandoned children in childhood through reading and improve theater in rural China;
-sponsor Haitian kids to finish school;
-continue to grow our public library in a coffee-farming Costa Rican village;
AND support many other programs that do wonderful work in India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Kosovo, Ghana and other countries.
If art isn’t your thing, you can still support our programs by donating or joining our team. Take a look at my projects to see more of what we do.
All the best, and HAPPY READING,
Kat

November vote for you!

This year we've seen tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, arson, and the ever-present budget cuts continue to undermine our schools and libraries. WE NEED BOOKS TO LEARN, yet there are schools out there that haven't been able to buy a new book since before the first lunar landing. Reader to Reader sends out millions of dollars worth of books every year to low-income and rural schools and libraries, FREE-OF-CHARGE.

Please consider donating to Reader to Reader, or spreading the word about our work. It is so important to bring literacy to our kids, and get this country READING!!

Best,
Kat

Hi my CR friend. I want to say "thank you", for voting, donating or just being a friend. This year I REALLY want to make a BIG difference for "AT-RISK" populations!

I want to raise the awareness that up to 35 percent of soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder! The crisis is SO bad that 18 veterans now commit suicide EVERY DAY!! Staggering isn't it!!

Please, just take a few minutes to see how the David Lynch Foundation is helping this situation at the link below, (or visit my page). Thank you in advance my CR friend, and I wish you very much success with your project. Regards. Dave.

Our Mission

Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser. Smiles Unlimited is an inter-denominational clown ministry committed to excellence in clowning in nursing homes, health-care facilities, hospitals, handicap facilities, prisons and wherever the healing power of humor can best serve those in need.

Smiles Unlimited was founded by the late Donald "Ski" Berkoski, who in 1982 became a clown as an unorthodox way to communicate with prisoners. He then transformed into a "tramp clown," a down-on-his-luck character who looks like he's been riding the rails or working in coal mines. So encouraged by the inmates' response, Berkoski founded Valparaiso, Indiana based Smiles Unlimited Universal Clown Ministry to train others in the art of spiritual clowning, while upholding to the highest standards of traditional clowning.

Sadly as fate would have it, in 2000 we lost our beloved "Ski" to a battle against prostate cancer and since then his wife, son and daughter, along with thousands of clowns around the country trained by "Ski" himself, continue his lifelong dream and wishes to make others happy, especially those who somehow lost their smile.

Yes, we do create jobs! Our Smiles Unlimited certified training course has graduated more than 5,000 clowns. Many of which have launched their own clowning ventures aside from supporting our charity with funding and as volunteers, donating their time and efforts purely as a labor of love, to help cheer up those in need, with a smile, a hug or a shoulder for comfort.

Smiles Unlimited welcomes all humans who wish to help make the world a better place through the spiritual healing power of laughter.
