Hi Sophie,

October vote for you, just in time for Halloween! Wanna hear something scary? Children in low-income neighborhoods have access to only one age-appropriate book on average for every 300 children. Only ONE book! That impacts over 16,400,000 children in the United States.

Even more frightening, 80% of preschool and after-school programs serving low-income populations have no age-appropriate books for their children. Books are so important to a child’s development for learning, imagination and literacy.

Please help Reader to Reader get books into these communities. We donate hundreds of thousands of books each year directly to schools, after-school programs, classrooms, day care programs and other groups serving low-income children across the country. Your donation of $10 today will help us send a box full of much-needed books to6 children that deserve better.
Thanks for all your support, and spread the word!

Happy reading,
Kat (and the Reader to Reader team)

August vote for you! Did you know that 60% of low-income children do not own a single book? School and public libraries are their only source of reading material, yet budget cuts leave many libraries unable to buy new books, or even without a full-time librarian. Reading is so important to a kid's education. Would you help Reader to Reader bring books to low-income schools and libraries across the country? A $10 donation sends a much-needed box of books. If you can't give, please join our team and ask others to help change the world, one book at a time. Thank you!

Summer is here, and I’m …
Summer is here, and I’m sure you’re looking forward to enjoying its glory. (I am!) But did you know that kids forget 1-3 months of learning during the summer? That’s 1-3 months of what they learned the year before, needing to be retaught in the fall before they can even start learning new material. This summer learning loss is worse in disadvantaged children, and widens the achievement gap further.
Summer learning programs are important to keep children’s brains active and engaged. Reader to Reader runs three summer programs, including one with both parents and children to increase family literacy. We have a lot of fun, and we learn A LOT!
Please help us keep summer learning fun and engaging for low-income families in western Massachusetts by joining our team, spreading the word and if you can, donating to Reader to Reader. Your support helps us keep kids reading, learning and succeeding!

Stuff About Me:
Came here to see if I can help people shake things up a bit, never did much on the charity bit (nothing big anyways), figured it's time to start changing that, especially now that I have children. Got to set a good example, right?

Areas of our world that I am interested in donating my time/money to:
The 3 big ones are an end to war, poverty, and injustice. If we can put an end to these cancers of our civilization, then everything else will follow.

On a lighter note...visual/performing arts and music, literacy, water/energy conservation, perma-culture, organic/natural products for life, preserving political/religious/sexual/economic freedom throughout...and all the other things that make life on this planet pleasurable and inspiring.

I am offering a digital collage to all who make a donation of any amount to any of my projects for the year 2011. 1st person to donate gets a 8x10 print, 1st donation of $50 or more gets it framed too! Yee-haw!

You will have a choice of a portrait of you/another person (or an image that represents you/that person), or your favorite animal. You can provide the animal picture if you want. You know what, forget constraints!! Suggest/give me any picture of anything or anyone and I'll bust out a super hella-cool collage for you!

My profile picture is an example, there is also another example in my pictures below. You can also check out my Facebook page called Smirk, to see other collages that I've made for a student film.
