We are educating, motivating and empowering children to make healthy food choices and get fit!
SOSMentor is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2000, that strives to improve the health and quality of life of underserved youth in the greater Los Angeles area through mentoring programs and educational support.
Our current focus is addressing the alarming rates of obesity and other related illnesses that are prevalent in low-income communities. Through a series of workshops on proper nutrition and physical fitness, students learn how to redefine their eating habits and make good food choices as well as how to incorporate fitness into their everyday lives.

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." ~Anne Bradstreet
As we continue through the hurricane season here on the east coast of the United States, we have been given a small taste of adversity. I work in a hotel, filled to capacity for several days in a row, following Irene, by people who were without clean water and/or electricity, those with damaged homes, or by those service people coming into the area to help clean up the mess, and restore us to our 'normal way of life'. My involvement here on Crowdrise, however, makes me aware that all of this past week is little more than a reminder of what a large part of Earth's inhabitants go through on a daily basis. Victims such as those of the earthquakes in Haiti and Japan, the tsunami, mass flooding, and the tornadoes that ripped though the Continental US's mid-west will require months, if not years, of recover. And the vast majority have no hotel where they can spend that recovery period.
"A boy doesn't have to go to war to be a hero; he can say he doesn't like pie when he sees there isn't enough to go around." ~Ed Howe
Don't underestimate even the most modest of involvement here on this site...
