Our Mission
Support our mission by creating your own fundraiser.
One of Boston’s original historic settlement houses, the South Boston Neighborhood House was founded in 1901 with a mission ‘to support family and neighborhood life in South Boston’. Affectionately known as “the Ollie” after our founder, Olivia James, the Neighborhood House has always been notable for the deep ties and connections among participants and families that have endured for generations.
The South Boston Neighborhood House is the oldest continually operating human service agency in the community. Today, the Neighborhood House impacts the lives of 2,000 individuals each year from preschoolers to seniors. Our six program and service areas, Early Education & Care, School Age Programs, Adolescent Education & Leadership, the Senior “Jet Set” Program, Community Outreach and Family Engagement, are designed to work in tandem to strengthen the fabric of family and community life through education and opportunity.
Volunteers are an integral part of life at “the Ollie.” Each year hundreds of amazing individuals and groups donate their time and talent for tutoring and mentoring youth, fundraising events, facility improvements, professional workshops, our holiday gift drive and family engagement events. This year, through the generosity and stewardship of the John Hancock Charity Marathon Program, we welcome a new group of champions and fundraisers, our 2012 Marathon Team. All of us here at the Ollie would be honored and grateful to have your support for our families, our community, our fantastic Marathon Team and the future we all share.
