EVENT: Haymakers For Hope Boston 2012

EVENT DATE: May 17, 2012

THE STORY:

ACT ONE: Goodbye ballet slippers, hello boxing gloves. I felt the need to shake things up last summer, so I found a new hobby: boxing. I was instantly hooked.

ACT TWO: Enter Jeff. After several months of doing boxing workouts, one of the trainers, Jeff, said, “You’ve been doing this for awhile, you should really be better. I can make you better.” And he did. Jeff has taught me to snap my punches, catch, slip, weave (well, okay, we’re still working on weaving), etc. He’s pushed me to do more with the sport than I ever thought I would or could…and we’re not done yet.

ACT THREE: The opportunity. Haymakers for Hope lost a female fighter in late March, and Jeff and another phenomenal trainer, Dan, thought I might be interested in filling the slot. In addition to pushing my boxing to the next level, I’d be supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, my home for the past three years. As a technician at the Farber, I’ve seen first-hand the Institute’s dedication to excellence in patient care and research, and I am thrilled to have this chance to support their work (…and this time with my fists instead of a pipette…).

ACT FOUR: Training. I’m working with an amazing group of people (Jeff, Dan, Melissa, and Kim, just to name a few!) at the Cambridge Boxing Club to prepare for the event.

ACT FIVE: The fight. May 17th, ready or not…

POINT BEING: I am going to find out just how tough I am over the next month and a half. This is my (half) marathon/Ironman/Tough Mudder/what-have-you, and I am running to finish. Please consider supporting me and Dana-Farber by donating here or purchasing a ticket to the event. My fight will be over on May 17th, but the fight against cancer rages on, and every cent makes a difference.
