THE HALL STEPS FOUNDATION IN CHICAGO 2010: “Breaking Records One Step at a Time”

Chicago: An Ideal Place to Make History– Both on and off the Race Course

Tackling global poverty starts at home. Chicago has been in the news a lot lately for making history, both good and bad. Chicago gave rise to our country’s first African-American president, witnessed the downfall of its governor, Blagojevich, amidst historic scandals and came close to being an Olympic host.

Now, the city is poised to be splashed across headlines again – and all for the good. This fall, the Hall Steps Foundation is launching its first-ever mentoring running program for youth 11 years old and up in the city’s lowest income neighborhoods. In honor of the Foundation’s commitment to tackling tough issues and breaking records, Ryan Hall is coming to Chicago this October 10, 2010, to do his part to try making history by going after the American Marathon Record.

The Hall Steps Running Mentoring Club is designed to involve adults and students in Saturday group runs and/or walks, along with additional weekly mentoring contact, in order to bring fresh health and hope to each participant’s lives, one step and run at a time. Students will receive weekly mentoring in their running and/or walking, nutrition and social goals. Additionally, the program will integrate with participant school networks to ensure that teachers and administrators acknowledge and celebrate student’s running and athletic achievements through the Steps program. This program matches adult mentors of all ages with students of 11 years old and up. The program will particularly focus on students from areas of cities that are underserved and will organize its first group run in the heart of Chicago’s West Side. There is also a Steps running program for adults!
