Ute Bohnsack's Fundraiser:
STOP NESTLE FROM HURTING ORANGUTANS PROJECT!
Ute
ORGANIZER: Posey
EVENT DATE: Mar 20, 2010
HERE'S THE STORY:
Nestle is feeling the crunch from Greenpeace’s latest campaign against palm oil. The video to the left does a spoof of Nestle’s KitKat commercial breaking off a piece of orangutan finger, instead of the expected KitKat bar, in an attempt to gross people out enough to stop buying Nestle products until it cuts rainforest-razing palm oil from its supply chain. In particular, Sinar Mas is the notorious palm oil producer messing around with Nestle.
Snarfing down Indonesian rainforests and endangered primates is bad enough, but the climate consequences of those KitKats is probably more than your stomach can handle: Indonesia’s deforestation and peatland clearing propels it to the third biggest emitter of greenhouse gases.
The best news of all if that Nestle is getting a hard lesson in social media and the power of the "crowd" as well as sustainability. After Nestle forced YouTube to take down the video due to copyright concerns, Greenpeace put the video back up on YouTube and other video sites, like Vimeo, and now a deluge of activists like me are starting to spread the word FAST about Nestle all over places like Facebook, Crowdrise, and Twitter. We hear it's working with Nestle saying they've already broken their relationship with Sinar Mas.
Make your own page, pass it around, keep up the pressure, and donate to Greenpeace to continue the badass fighting they do for the poor little guys like the Orangutan's to the left.
