Tired of hearing only bad news from Africa? So are we. Ready for a different story? Imagine Scholar works with some of the brightest, most motivated kids we’ve ever met and gives them the tools to break out of tough circumstances and go after their dreams.Take Thenjiwe. She lives with her father and siblings in the remote village of Driekoppies. They depend on their cows and small plot of land for income. By the end of Imagine Scholar’s September writing workshop, Thenjiwe was crafting elegant full-length essays (complete with thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion) like she’d been doing it her whole life. Throw in free-form poetry prompts, a discussion on the movie Contact about technology’s role in the world, and a field trip to the Astronomy Observatory in Pretoria, and she had a pretty big month.
