Hi! My name is Susan Shanahan and I was really excited to come accross Crowdrise, which is a totally awesome place to beocme involved and GIVE BACK!!! So, I made a New Year's resolution for 2012, to raise $500.00 by APRIL 1st for the Alzhiemers Association through crowdrise/hilarityforcharity in honor of my mother, Anne M. Shanahan.
WHY? Well, I 'm a Registered Nurse, living in Brooklyn NY. I have only been a nurse for under a year, and I see soooo many cases of Alzhiemers/Dementia & related disorders. It just breaks my heart! But I can also relate at a deeply personal level. My Mother Anne was diagnosed with Alzhiemers Disease in her 60's. It was a slow, painful, decline and then a very fast end.
My parents joyfully celebrated their 50th anniversary shortly before she passed away in October of 2009, I'm not sure Mom really knew what the significance of the day was, but she was happy and she drank champagne and laughed until she cried!!! And we all smiled and laughed right along with her. I will treasure those memeories and just pray I never lose them due to deadly alzhiemers.
As one of her caretakers, along with my Dad, we watched her slipping away. The strain & pain it caused my Father and entire family, the experience I had caring for her, led me to change careers at 40; and become a Nurse. But I want to do more! I want to put an end to this madness and do whatever I can to support the Alzhiemers Association.
