STRONG WOMEN ORGANIZING OUTRAGEOUS PROJECTS
The Strong Women of SWOOP complete monthly Community Service Workdays -- one-day heavy-lifting projects for people in our community who have nowhere else to turn. We also do the same for local non-profits that serve the community and are trying to make their limited resources go farther. Our strength is providing highly organized, skilled, and joyous volunteer labor. In the process, we offer women an opportunity to build community and learn new skills. We started in 1996, cleaning up after Hurricane Fran, and we haven't stopped since. Our new program, Ramp It Up!, will answer calls for wheelchair ramps from people who need them most, but can least afford them.

You have to experience a SWOOP Workday to really understand the power of bringing a group of women (anywhere from 30 to 130) together to make a difference in someone's life. We swoop in and transform, in one day, whatever we are working on that day. We painted 8 apartment units for a nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing to individuals with disability -- in one day. We hauled away 25 tons of trash and yard waste, built two ramps, repaired and painted a deck, and landscaped a community center -- in one day. We cleared trails and built a horse shelter and a new platform for a non-profit that provides equine therapy for those with physical disabilities -- in one day. SWOOP has completed well over 100 such projects. I love this group.
